En este nuevo podcast Uruguay cultural, de nuestra escuela de español La Herradura, queremos explicar más sobre una nueva propuesta para todos los estudiantes que nos visitan en Uruguay: pasar un fin de semana en la capital de Argentina. Buenos Aires es una ciudad que ofrece una experiencia única y variada, con su rica cultura, su deliciosa comida y su emocionante vida nocturna. Todos deberíamos visitarla al menos una vez en la vida para disfrutar de todo lo que tiene para ofrecer. Y por eso queremos invitarlos a recorrer la ciudad guiados por nuestro profesor argentino a partir de este 27 de mayo y a lo largo de todo este 2023.

In this new podcast Cultural Uruguay, from our Spanish school La Herradura, we want to explain more about a new proposal for all students who visit us in Uruguay: spend a weekend in the capital of Argentina. Buenos Aires is a city that offers a unique experience, with its rich culture, delicious food and exciting nightlife. We should all visit this city at least once in a lifetime to enjoy all it has to offer. And that’s why we want to invite you to tour the city guided by our Argentine teacher from this May 27 and throughout this 2023.

Hace unas semanas recibimos a Andrew Scharff en nuestra escuela en Punta del Este. Participó en un curso de español durante 2 semanas y vivió en la residencia de la escuela. Al terminar su programa de immersion, dio unos espectáculos en Punta del Este y Montevideo.

Clown the World es Andrew Scharff,. Su objetivo es difundir risas y conectar a diferentes personas a través del lenguaje internacional de la comedia física y el circo.

Después e exitosas giras que han abarcado 13 países, Andrew continuó en 2023 con otra gira en América del Sur. En Uruguay presentó su espectáculo en varias organizaciones con que nosotros cooperamos enviándoles voluntarios.

Para nosotros fue un placer ser parte de esto aquí en Uruguay, ver la cara feliz, las risas y lo que transmites es algo impresionante. ¡Muchas gracias!

A few weeks ago we received Andrew Scharff at our school in Punta del Este. He attended a 2 weeks Spanish courses and lived in the school residence. After finishing his Spanish immersion program, he gave several performances in Punta del Este and Montevideo.

Clown the World is Andrew Scharff. His goal is spreading laughter and connecting different people through the international language of physical comedy and circus.

After successful tours that have spanned 13 countries, Andrew continued in 2023 with another tour in South America, Uruguay. He performed at several institutions the school cooperarte with in sending volunteers.

For us it was a pleasure to be part of this here in Uruguay, to see the happy face, the laughter and what you transmit is something impressive, thank you very much

El término “plancha” proviene del lunfardo carcelario, así llamaban los presos a las fotos que se les tomaban para los prontuarios policiales. Ser “un plancha” es entonces ser un rostro registrado en las cárceles montevideanas y conocido por los policías. La lengua plancha es una creación cultural que se remonta a estos orígenes carcelarios del término.  A disfrutar y por favor dejen vuestros comentarios.

In this new podcast Uruguay cultural of our Spanish school La Herradura, we want to explain a little more about the “Plancha culture”. The term “plancha” comes from the prison lunfardo, as the prisoners gave the photos that were taken for the police records this name. To be “un plancha” is to be a face registered in the Montevideo prisons and known by the police. The “plancha” language is a cultural creation that goes back to these prison origins of the term.  Enjoy and please leave your comments..

I am Redmer van Netten, 19 Years old, and I am doing an internship for la Herradura. Born in the Netherlands I really enjoy playing and watching football. It was also one of the reasons why I moved to Uruguay for 5 months. football is more than only a sport in this country, wherever you go you will always find some people playing the sport. in this post, I will talk about my football experiences in Uruguay.

Back in the Netherlands, I play for a team called HJSC. it’s a small amateur team in the north of holland. when I moved to Uruguay I wanted to play for a team as well, to stay fit and to get some new experiences. I went to the closest football field owned by Deportivo Maldonado, the local Professional football club, and asked if I could join a team for practice. that was possible, they would see if I was good enough and they would decide after a week if a could stay. after 2/3 weeks the period was over and I looked for a new team. it was an amazing experience that I will never forget to play with the under 19’s of a professional football team. I found a new team called Defensor Maldonado, which is an amateur team in the suburbs of Maldonado, the players and staff were super friendly and helped me with everything.

in the peroid around new years eve there are a lot of festivals and parties in Punta del Este, people from all over the world come and go to the pennisula to celebrate the starting of the new year. The warm weather, the nice beaches makes it the the perfect place to have a festival. The students that were staying at the school went to one of the many festivals in Punta del Este. the festival started around midnight and ended in the morning. During the weeks around new years there were a lot of festivals in Punta del Este, for example the DJ David Guetta went there a few days after new year. For people that loves to go to a festival is Punta del Este is the time between christmas and new year the perfect place to go.

We at Spanish la Herradura want you to know about our newly built website. The older website has served for multiple years and we wanted to get something new.  We want to modernize and keep you up to date about the information of the school. Although the blog is still available via the website Spanishherradura.com, it is now also possible to look at our posts on the newly built website under the title “blog”.  Although it is not entirely finished yet, we invite you to go and visit the website!

Uruguay – Montevideo- Punta del Este (spanish-herradura.com)

After a period of Covid, the school is open again and is running as before. With the change that the school has been moved to Punta del Este instead of Montevideo. We are satisfied with the increasing number of students who are finding their way back to school. Where the level of tourism is slowly rising again, we are preparing for a fantastic summer. Where learning Spanish, building friendships, and having fun are central.

Excursions during the lessons

For La Herradura not only giving lessons central, but also giving the students a cultural experience combined with Spanish lessons is important. These groups of classes provide the student a cultural experience, but it is also an educational way to teach the students Spanish. Examples of those lessons are a mate class, preparing Uruguayan food, watching the world cup match in a local bar, or going to a local market.

Mate class

Mate is an important part of the culture of Uruguay, where you will always find a person with a thermo and a Mate in their hands. The preparation is very important for the Uruguayans, and it needs to be done one single way. The teacher Roberto, who is a real Uruguayan, gave a perfect explanation about how to make a mate.

World cup

Arguably the most important part of the culture in Uruguay is Football, and the world-cup, it is the perfect time to experience the passion and love for sports. Together with the teacher and the students, they went to a local bar to watch the match between Uruguay against South Korea. Although the match was disappointing you could still see every person signing and cheering their country to win the game.

Farewell of Juan

Juan has decided to stop at the school after a long time, after 21 years he has decided to take on a new challenge. He has worked in the school in Montevideo and Punta del Este but has now decided to put an end to it. We as La Herradura thank him for all the time and energy he has put into the school and wish him every success with his new job.

New website

After having a website for several years, it was time to get some change. To make the school more modern we have decided to make a new website. The old website was difficult to use and did not have all the information. The website keeps the same name Spanish-herradura.com and there is a possibility to look at the Blog. Although the website is still not finished, we have decided to already upload it for the public. In the coming weeks, the website will be finished and all the information will be ready to read.

Spanish Herradura wishes you a merry Christmas and an educative new year. It was a difficult period for us during the time of covid, but we are looking forward to a positive future. We all hope that you will return healthy and safely to school after the break!

It is almost summer in Uruguay and after a week of warm temperatures of around 40 degrees, it was time that the temperature goes down. On Sunday it was warm with temperatures of 35 degrees. But later in the afternoon, the wind increased and it started to cool down. Around 8 o’clock in the evening, the sky began to look dark and you could already see the first lightning. After that, it didn’t take long before it started to rain very hard. In combination with the thunderstorm, this resulted in beautiful images. With temperatures of 30 degrees in upcoming weeks, we have something to look forward to in Punta del Este.

Usually, the school building is only used for giving lessons to our students, where students are learning Spanish, and where friendships are made. After removing the whiteboard a parrilla appeared. In the past, the school building was outside where the former owners did a lot of barbeques. It is an important part of the Uruguayan culture. Matias (Teacher) made a wonderful barbeque which and teached the students how to make a real Uruguayan barbeque. The day after, the barbeque place was cleaned and the whiteboard returned so on Monday a lesson could be given

after a 0-0 draw against South Korea on Thursday, Uruguay needs to play a crucial game against Portugal Today. The game against South Korea was considered a boring game without many chances with both teams happy to draw. Both teams defended the draw, believing that drawing was better than losing. But with the Portugal game upcoming Uruguay needs to secure another draw or a win to make a chance to go to the next round.

As a cultural lesson, the school went to a local bar to visit the game of Uruguay against South Korea. With the header of Godin as the only highlight of the game, the students went back to the school with disappointed feelings. Hopefully, the next game against Portugal will be more spectacular.

After a 3-2 win Portugal against Ghana Portugal is the favorite for the match against Uruguay. With big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Ruben Dias Portugal can be considered one of the favorites to win this world cup. If they win against Uruguay they will be most likely through to the next round of the tournament. Although scoring 3 goals against Ghana the team Portugal is known for its defensive approach towards the games. During the European competition in France, they won the tournament with 4 draws.

On Monday after all the lessons ended at 15:00 the students together with the teacher went to Punta del Este to see the game at Box Garden. The Pop-up restaurant area was full of Uruguayans that cheer on their team. All the people were signing, cheering, and of course drinking beer. Football is a very important part of their culture and at events like the world cup, you can really recognize that.

The game started with 2 teams who were defending a lot, the first half did not have many chances for both sides. Uruguay got one very big chances after a beautiful solo of Rodrigo Bentacur. The midfielder from Tottenham hotspurs dribbled past 2 defenders but the attack was stopped by the goalkeeper of Portugal.

In the second half Portugal scored the first goal of the match in the 55th minute, A cross from outside the box was to difficult to defend for the uruguayans. Also because Cristiano ronaldo was jumping towards the ball, But in the end he did not hit it. After the 1-0 the Uruguayans had a more positive way of playing the game, they created a lot of chance but were not able to score a goal. Luis Suarez almost scored a goal for the uruguayans, but unfortunately he missed.

After Portugal made a defensive substitution, Uruguay had more difficulties creating chances, and in the end of the match the defender made a unfortunate handball while he was trying to tackle the ball. The VAR was needed to make sure that it was a penalty. Bruno Fernandes scored the questionable penalty and Uruguay lost for the first time this tournament. The next game of Uruguay is against Ghana who earlier this Monday won against South Korea. to make in to the next round of the world cup Uruguay needs to get at least a win, but they are still dependent on the match of Portugal and South Korea.

The world cup is about to start and that’s why La Herradura is going to inform you about the events in Uruguay and the successes that Uruguay may achieve. Uruguay is all set for the world cup, wherever you walk, you will constantly be reminded of the fact that the world cup is about to start. For example, near the school, you have a supermarket where every employee wears an Uruguayan shirt, and there are a lot of other ways to recognize it.

This week a film was published by the Uruguayan football association where the selection was announced Los 26 de la Celeste – YouTube. In the video, a tour was made through all the departments where the football players come from. The head coach Diego has chosen a selection of 26 football players, the selection of Uruguay is with an average age of 27.8 years one of the oldest in this world cup. With players such as Suarez, Godin, Muslera, Caceres, and Cavani, Uruguay has the selection with the most players who were also active at the world cup in south Africa. The team is a combination of experienced players and very young players such as Nunez, Ugalte, Valverde, Pellestri, etc. This makes it interesting to watch Uruguay because you can see very nicely how the old generation will help the new generation of players. Uruguay has a difficult group with Portugal, South Korea, and Ghana. Ghana in particular has an interesting squad of players who have recently opted to go to Ghana over their country of birth, players such as Lamptey and Williams who have played for England and Spain in the youth teams. We will follow the world cup closely and keep you informed.

Last weekend a few students went by boat to Argentina to explore the city. After a 6-hour bus trip to Colonia del Sacramento, they took the boat to the capital of Argentina. After a boat trip of just over an hour, they arrived in Buenos Aires.

Using the Subway system, they went through town. The day started on Florida’s shopping street, which is surrounded by people asking you for “Cambio?”. This actually means “Exchange” where they ask for foreign currency. This is because the Argentine peso is in a trough, and therefore the locals prefer a more stable currency such as the US dollar. After you respond to one of the people you are taken inside a small shop where you get your Argentina pesos at an outstanding rate.

We also took the metro to Teatro colon, the Obelisco, and plaza de mayo. Furthermore, a tour was made by Estadio Monumental, where the preparations for the Coldplay concert were being held at that time.

On the last day, we went to the district La Boca, known for its coloured buildings. The district is close to the harbour port of the city. And although the neighbourhood is not very well regarded for safety, it was fairly safe in the tourist areas. In addition to the coloured buildings, the district is also known for the Boca Juniors football club. With the stadium in the middle of the neighbourhood, it is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.

Football, football! The World Cup is close and at the school, we always receive students who come to Uruguay interested in the most important sport in the country. Our student from Holland started practicing with the local football team after learning some basic expressions in Spanish. It’s lovely to see the ease with which Redmer integrated into Maldonado’s team. After taking some basic lessons, we turned the board into a tactical plane where he explained to me the differences between the Uruguayan way and the Dutch way of playing football. All in Spanish, of course. And with him, we learned expressions we can find inside a soccer field. Scoring, recovering the ball, stinging on the left, central scoreboard, hitting the post, goalkeeper, goal, net, and many other words that turned the class into a football locker room in the middle of a tactical explanation before the start of the second half.

Fútbol, fútbol! El mundial está cerca y en la escuela siempre recibimos a  estudiantes que llegan a Uruguay interesados en el deporte más importante del  país. Nuestro estudiante de Holanda comenzó a practicar con el equipo de  fútbol local después de aprender algunas expresiones básicas en español. Es  maravilloso ver la facilidad con la que Redmer se integró en el equipo de  Maldonado. Después de tomar algunas lecciones básicas, convertimos la  pizarra en un plano táctico donde él me explicó las diferencias entre el modo  uruguayo y el modo holandés de jugar al fútbol. Todo en español, claro. Y junto  con él aprendimos expresiones que podemos encontrar dentro de una cancha  de fútbol. Marcar, recuperar la pelota, picar por la izquierda, marcador central,  pegó en el palo, golero, arco, red y muchas otras palabras que convirtieron la  clase en un vestuario de fútbol en medio de una explicación táctica antes de  comenzar el segundo tiempo.

The Fingers of Punta Del Este

The fingers of punta del Este were built because of the International Meeting of Modern Sculpture in the Open Air in Punta del Este. It was the first sculpture built for this event. The fingers are laying on the beach of Punta del Este and have a look over the Atlantic Ocean

Casa Pueblo

Casa Pueblo was built by the famous architect Carlos Páez Villaró in 1960. During that time it was built as a Hotel but nowadays the building is used as a museum, Restaurant and a part of the building is still used as a hotel.

Puerto de Punta Del Este  

The Harbour of Punta del Este is always an active part of the city, Around the harbor, you will see a lot of people picnicking and enjoying life. close to the sea, you have stands where fisher man’s sell their catch. During the less busy hours, you can spot Sea lions laying down to have some rest.

Isla Gorriti

The island laying in front of the beaches of Punta Del Est. It is easily accessible by boat service from the harbor. During the summertime, the Island is well visited by many people and people park their own boats in front of the beach. The Island contains 2 beaches, Playa Honda which faces towards the Rio de la Plata, and Puerto Jardin which faces towards the city of Punta del Este.

The centre of Punta del Este

On the peninsula of Punta del Este, you can find a wide variety of restaurants, stores, bars, and nightclubs. Around the Coast, you can find the most restaurants and Bars, and on the street “ Avenida Juan Gorlero you can find the most stores.

Box Garden

For everybody who wants to eat or drink something, Box Garden is the perfect place. Box Garden is a place with a collection of small restaurants that are based in a container. The building contains 3 levels of restaurants with an open space in the middle of the building where it is for everybody to consume their meal or drink. Most of the time there is a live act in the evening.

Parque Municipal Mancebo

Near the school of La Herradura is a small park. This park is following a small river that is going from the city of Maldonado. Although the size is not very big, it’s very cozy and it always a lot of people walking through it.

El Centro Maldonado

The center of Maldonado is a real place where the locals come a lot. There is always something to do in the center, there are often people who sell their self-made goods on the street. But also the Plaza with the church is a beautiful visit. On the weekends there is often a market in the center where the locals buy their needs.

Leonel Viera Bridge

This bridge connects the city of Punta Del Este and la Barra. The bridge is made by the Uruguayan architect Leonel Viera and is known for its wave pattern.

Azotea de Haedo

the building was built by the former Uruguayan President Eduardo Victor Haedo, as a cultural center. He also used the area as his own property. Nowadays the center is open to the public, where everybody can see the beautiful garden and the museum in the building.

The first lesson is about: The basics

After a week of getting used to Uruguay, we started planning a trip to the capital of Uruguay. It took us two hours to travel from Punta del Este to the bus station in Montevideo. The city is best known for its long Rambla (boulevard) around the Rio de la Plata. Also, Montevideo is the city where the first-ever world cup is played.

After a comfortable bus ride without many stops, we arrived at “ Tres Cruces ”, Which is a large bus station with a very modern mall above. We took the bus to Punta Carretas where our accommodation was located. The apartment had a view of the ocean and the local golf course.

Located in the Ciudad Viejo, Plaza de Independencia is the main tourist attraction of the city. In the middle of the square, there is a statue of José Artigas. He was a military general during the war for independence against Spain. Underneath the statue is a tomb that is guarded by two soldiers for 24 hours per day. Surrounding the plaza are many beautiful buildings such as the Palacio de Salvio, which was built in 1928 and at that point it was the highest building in South America.

Other than the Plaza de Independencia, Montevideo has a lot of parks with statues and fountains. We visited the botanic garden in Parque Rodo, which hosted an event inside. There were a lot of stands that sold souvenirs, local foods, and drinks. Also, a museum was open and there were a lot of people picnicking or doing other activities.

My name is Redmer van Netten, I am 19 years old. I study International business at the university of NHLStenden in Leeuwarden. For this semester I am going to work for Spanish Herradura in Uruguay. I had 2 years of Spanish at my university and I always wanted to be able to speak it fluently. In combination with my internship, is this the perfect opportunity for me to improve my Spanish and gain experience in the field of marketing.

On the first of September, I have begun traveling to Uruguay. In total I had 2 layovers, one in Houston and in Panama City. Which was a great opportunity to explore two new cities. After 2 days of traveling, I arrived at the airport of Montevideo. Where I was greeted by the host and they took me to my new home for the upcoming 5 months.

The first day after I arrived we went to Casa Pueblo which is a hotel created by the Uruguayan architect Carlos Páez Vilaró. Which is turned partly into a museum, and the other part stayed as a hotel and restaurant. The building is located on a small peninsula that has an amazing view over the Rio de la Plata.

After I got to know the people and the surroundings better, we went to a football match of Uruguay under 19 against Brazil under 19. This was an unforgettable experience because I could see the best players from these countries who are the same age as me.

I am excited to update you about my experiences in Uruguay!

Staying at Cortijo la Herradura for the past month and a half has truly been an incredible experience. Overall, my time here has been filled with so much happiness, learning, excitement, and peacefulness. I have been able to spend many wonderful hours with the animals here, all of whom have a special place in my heart (especially my favorite cat Campeon!). My time with the horse Cleopatra has been one of much patience and education yet also adventure and connection. I have also enjoyed the cooking and baking aspects of my time here and being able to help Rebeca in her culinary aspirations. Not only have I added new foods to my recipe book but also I have gained firsthand experience on the behind the scenes of a kitchen. The ecological influences on the functioning of Cortijo la Herradura have also taught me much on how to incorporate sustainable practices into my own life. Finally, and most importantly, the people here have truly enriched my experience. I have been able to interact and form relationships with local people, all of whom have treated me with so much respect and kindness. Most touching for me was how Margo and Rebeca have accepted me into their family – my experience here unquestionably would not be the same without them. Their openness, generosity, and groundedness is admirable and unlike most people in the world, and it has truly been an honor to have had this time with them and their animals in my life. I will forever be thankful for and be thinking of my Uruguayan family.

Quedarme en Cortijo la Herradura por un mes y medio ha sido una experiencia muy increíble. En general, mi tiempo aquí se ha llenado con tanta felicidad, aprendizaje, emoción, y paz. He podido pasar muchas horas extraordinarios con los animales aquí, todos quienes tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón (especialmente mi gato favorito Campeón!). Mi tiempo con el caballo Cleopatra ha sido de mucha paciencia y educación y también de aventura y conexión. He disfrutado los aspectos de cocción y horneado de mi tiempo aquí y ser capaz de ayudar a Rebeca en sus aspiraciones culinarias. No solo he sumado nuevas comidas a mi libro de recetas sino he ganado experiencia de primera mano de la cocina entre bastidores. Las influencias ecológicas en la funciona de Cortijo la Herradura también me ha enseñado mucho sobre cómo puedo incorporar prácticas sostenibles en mi propia vida. Finalmente, y lo que es más importante, las personas aquí han enriquecido mi experiencia. He sido capaz de interactuar y formar relaciones con personas locales, todas quienes me han tratado con tanto respeto y amabilidad. Lo más conmovedor para mí fue como Margo y Rebeca me han aceptado en su familia – mi experiencia aquí indiscutiblemente no sería la misma sin ellas. Sus actitudes receptivas, generosidad, y conexión con la tierra son admirables y es a diferencia de muchas personas en el mundo, y realmente ha sido un honor tener este tiempo con ellas y sus animales en mi vida. Siempre estaré agradecida y estaré pensando en mi familia Uruguaya.

I stayed at the school for two weeks and had a wonderful time. Not only is the teacher Matias extremely kind and patient with my Spanish, but the beauty and tranquility of Maldonado and Punta del Este allowed for a smooth transition to my new environment. With Matias, I was able to vastly improve my speaking and understanding of the Spanish language (especially the Uruguayan version!) in addition to experiencing the unique culture of the area. My learning took place both in the classroom and in the nearby museums, art galleries, musical performances, nature sites, and local stores. I enjoyed going to Casa de La Cultura in particular because it displayed a large range of beautiful Uruguayan talents and customs which enabled me to better understand and feel connected to the people. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to improve their Spanish and truly immerse themselves in another culture.

Estuve en la escuela por dos semanas y tuve un tiempo maravilloso. No solo el profesor Matías es muy amable y paciente con mi español, pero la belleza y tranquilidad de Maldonado y Punta del Este permiten una transición suave a mi ambiente nuevo. Con Matías, podría mejorar mucho mi parlante y comprensión del idioma español (especialmente la versión Uruguaya!) y en adición podría experimentar la cultura única de la zona. Mi aprendizaje ocurría tanto en la clase como en los museos cercanos, galerías de arte, performances musicales, los sitios naturales, y tiendas locales. Disfruté ir a Casa de La Cultura en particular porque hay una gama grande de los talentos y costumbres lindos de Uruguay, los cuales me pudieron mejorar mi entendimiento y sentirme más conectado con las personas. Recomiendo mucho esta experiencia a todas las personas que quieren aprender español y sumergirse realmente en otra cultura. 

Hemos empezado el cuarto mes del año 2022 y de verdad que me pongo un poco sentimental acordándome de tantos buenos recuerdos de todos ustedes.

Me viene a la cabeza una conversación, una cara, una sonrisa, una amistad, un paseo, una reunión y de todos los abrazos de corazón….

We have started the fourth month of 2022, and it honestly makes me sentimental remembering all the beautiful moments we I shared with you all.

I think about all the conversations, faces, smiles, friendships, walks, meetings and all the heartfelt hugs.

Thanks to our teacher Matías I can share these great moments with you in the video above.

The good news is that we have been busy with adapting our programme from Montevideo. As you all know, our Montevideo school has been closed. Due to the pandemic, we have decided not to reopen our school for now in Montevideo, but we will now offer a culture programme in combination with lessons, guided tours and conversational practice. The home page of the Montevideo school will be soon adapted with more detailed information. As you all know, personal attention at the Herradura schools is very important to us, and as students have less time now, we have designed a Spanish immersion programme offering an experience at our schools in Montevideo, Punta del Este and the countryside.

We would really like to hear your comments and ideas to improve this programme. This time we would also like to ask our students who have participated in the programme to leave comments or feedback on google.

Hello everyone! It’s been a busy year filled with constant monitoring of covid cases and travel requirements to be able to welcome students to our school in Uruguay. We have made some big changes but are excited to share them with you all and continue adapting to be able to offer our students the best experience in Uruguay that they can have!

Hola a todos! Fue un año ocupado con cambios constantes de casos de covid y requisitos para entrar al país. Hemos cambiado mucho y estamos emocionados por compartir con ustedes y continuar adaptándonos para que podamos dar a nuestros estudiantes la mejor experiencia en Uruguay que sea posible. 

We continued to receive students in person to La Herradura early in 2021 following safety and health guidelines as the country had great control over cases and vaccinations began in February. Although a tough decision, we decided to close our school location in Montevideo to adapt to demand. We found that our students did not want to stay in a bigger city due to safety and health concerns during the pandemic, so we focused our attention on our other locations. Students have been enjoying group lessons in our beautiful villa 2 blocks from the beach in Punta del Este/Maldonado and a relaxing ranch stay in the natural environment of the countryside. 

Continuamos recibiendo estudiantes en La Herradura desde el principio del 2021 mientras seguimos todas las reglas de seguridad y salud porque el país tuvo gran control de los casos y las vacunas empezaron a ser distribuidas en febrero. Aunque fue difícil, cerramos nuestra escuela en Montevideo para cambiar con la demanda. Nuestros estudiantes no quisieron quedarse en una ciudad grande por la pandemia, así que nos enfocamos más en nuestras otras ubicaciones. Han disfrutando clases en grupo en nuestra villa que está a 2 cuadras de la playa en Punta del Este/Maldonado y tiempo relajado en nuestro rancho en el campo en la naturaleza. 

As new variants formed, cases began to rise, so travel to the country stopped from April until mid-July. We continued to remain flexible and transitioned again to fully online lessons for foreigners. We also spent time promoting Cortijo La Herradura to local Uruguyuans. We offer horseback riding and training along with a relaxing ranch stay where one can enjoy our indigenous garden and animals. 

Una variante nueva apareció y los casos empezaron a crecer, por eso el país cerró sus fronteras desde abril hasta mediados de julio. Para adaptarnos a esta situación pasamos a dar clases en línea para extranjeros. También, nos enfocamos en promocionar Cortijo La Herradura a uruguayos locales quienes quieren aprender a entrenar los caballos, montarlos y quedarse en la tranquilidad del campo con un jardín indigena y animales. 

As cases became manageable again along with continued rising vaccination rates, the borders opened to those with special permission in July. We welcomed several students from mid-July to November who were able to enjoy the country before the busy summer season, especially our Punta del Este/Maldonado location.

Cuando los casos se hicieron manejables y la cantidad de vacunas crecieron, las fronteras se abrieron a viajeros con permiso especial en julio. Dimos la bienvenida a algunos estudiantes desde mitad de julio hasta noviembre que disfrutaron el país antes de la temporada de verano, especialmente en Punta del Este/Maldonado. 

The borders opened November 1st for fully-vaccinated travelers. Non-vaccinated travelers can apply for a special permission through the school to arrive in Uruguay. They then must quarantine for 10 days after entering the country with an option to stay in a private bungalow at Cortijo in the countryside. As of December 20th, 77.95% of the population have a first dose of a vaccine and 75.35% have a second dose according to Uruguay’s Public Health Ministry (source). Uruguay is offering vaccines to foreigners with some exceptions, more information: here. 

Las fronteras se abrieron el primero de noviembre para los extranjeros con todas las vacunas. Los extranjeros sin vacunas pueden solicitar un permiso especial de estudio a través de la escuela para llegar a Uruguay. Entonces, tienen que hacer cuarentena por 10 días después de llegar al país con una opción de hacer cuarentena en bungalow privado en el Cortijo del campo. Desde el 10 de diciembre, 77,95% de la población tiene una primera dosis de vacuna y 77,35% con una segunda dosis según el ministerio de salud pública de Uruguay (enlace). As more foreigners enter the country, we decided to offer programs in Montevideo just without the physical school building. We offer a conversation class where one of our teachers takes students on a cultural tour of the city, including visiting museums and landmarks along with exploring the gastronomy of the city. For those who would like a more grammar-focused course, our teachers can meet at one’s accommodation, a park, the beach, a bar, or wherever the student would like to meet! For students who are not already staying in Montevideo, we offer accommodation in a family home. These programs can be offered to individuals and small groups.

Con más extranjeros llegando, hicimos un programa en Montevideo sin una escuela física. Ofrecemos clases de conversación en las que nuestro profesor muestra a los estudiantes la ciudad, los museos, lugares culturales y la gastronomía. Si alguien quiere una clase gramatical, nuestros profesores pueden asistir a su alojamiento, un parque, la playa, un bar o cualquier lugar. Para los estudiantes que no se quedan en Montevideo, ofrecemos alojamiento en una casa de familia. Los grupos pequeños o estudiantes individuales pueden hacer este programa.

This past weekend, several students and I took a weekend trip to Cabo Polonio, which is located up the eastern coast about 2 hours from Punta del Este.

We parked our car at the terminal and took a ride to Cabo Polonio that took around 20 minutes over the sand dunes. We landed in the “town” which consists of small houses spread across the beach interwoven by sand roads or grass paths. There is a main road where the terminal is located for the jeeps, and right down the road, there’s a collection of hostels, restaurants, bars, and stores.

A small walk away from the main area is a place to watch sea lions right under the lighthouse. They’re quite noisy and often bark like a dog to mark their territory- along with fighting each other. It was very interesting watching them interact and hop around the rocks. I also climbed the lighthouse and had a beautiful view of the town and beach!

Many of the owners of stores and hostels were very kind and asked me where I was from and what I was doing in Uruguay, which was great Spanish practice. An artisan maker and I spoke about knitting and crocheting for almost 10 minutes- mostly me asking for advice as I am learning how. Overall, the weekend was a lot of fun filled with beautiful sights, good food, and live music!

After I chose my internship in Uruguay, I began to read about the culture and history of the country to find out what I was getting myself into. Most spoke of gaucho culture and the high consumption of meat, linguistic differences like the use of vos, and mate. Although all are true (especially mate as it’s more likely to see an Uruguayan with a thermos under arm and a silver bombilla sticking out in the other than without), I couldn’t get a feel on how life actually is here or what the people are like.

After meeting several Uruguyuans and living here for two months, I definitely know more about the people and have had a majority of good experiences interacting with them. An interesting cultural quirk of the people here is they love to lengthen the lifespan of any item. The ferias or markets are filled with a range of household items to electronics to clothes to antiques that would be thrown away without a second thought in the US.

Many people have been curious as to why I’m here from the US and want to speak with me about my time here. When I speak in Spanish to someone, a lot answer back in English much to my chagrin! When I kindly tell them I want to practice Spanish, they typically switch back. 

I’ve mostly met people from other places in the world, including Germany, Switzerland, and Brazil. The majority of La Herradura students are adults who have moved to Uruguay to live rather than visit or vacation. It’s been interesting to hear about their experiences applying for residency and looking for housing in a language that they’re still learning. I’ve also met other people through asados or barbecues held at the school and going to see live music as one of my roommates is a musician.

As my second month in Uruguay comes to a close, I understand the appeal of moving here, especially from the US. There’s a different pace to life that focuses on enjoying the day and spending time with loved ones rather than the work-eat-sleep cycle that many people close to me in the US have fallen into. Many businesses aren’t open on Sundays and close for several hours after lunchtime during the week. I’ll often see younger people gather with friends at the beach and workers take a long lunch eating in the park during this siesta time; whereas in the US, lunch is often limited to half an hour so most are unable to go home, especially in cities.

Despite this idealized view of a perfect, tranquil beach life in Uruguay, a slower-paced life does come with some cons. Coming from a country that prioritizes speed and doesn’t have much patience, inefficiency is one of my biggest pet peeves. We had to get a key replaced for our house, and after the third key made by a key store didn’t fit in the lock, we went to two other stores before finally getting one made correctly. This isn’t meant to degrade Uruguay or the people in any way, I’m just taking notice of what I’ve experienced. It’s taken me a bit to get used to this pace to stop and smell the roses, but it’s a welcomed change compared to my busy schedule in the US. I especially like the slower pace of long nights out at bars as it truly is a marathon and not a sprint!

Colonia del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay facing the Río de la Plata and Buenos Aires, Argentina. It’s about 4 hours from Punta del Este and 2 from Montevideo. Lilian, a Brazilian student, and I (Amber, US) took a trip to the beautiful city of Colonia.

When we arrived, we were immediately amazed by the architecture and cobblestone streets. It’s a beautiful city to simply walk around and eat at restaurants along the water, but we also visited many museums.

For just 50 pesos, we could enter several museums around the Barrio Histórico, including the Portuguese Museum and Tile Museum. We also climbed to the top of the historic lighthouse for a beautiful view of the city and river. It’s a hike but completely worth it! Overall, it’s a great place to take a day or weekend trip.

My name is Amber Bortner, and I’m a social media and promotion intern for la Herradura Spanish school in Uruguay. I’m from Pennsylvania and will be entering my last semester at Penn State this spring with majors in Hospitality Management and Spanish with a concentration in Event Management.

I have previously studied abroad in México through my university. It was a great experience, but I wanted to find a more independent, long-term abroad opportunity to better my Spanish fluency and gain international work experience. After reading about Uruguay and la Herradura, I fell in love with the idea of going to Uruguay! 

I arrived in Montevideo the morning of October 1st after a long day and night of travel. The program director picked me up, and we drove ~1 ½ hours to the house I’ll be staying in for the next 3 months. I was exhausted and had to take a siesta, but my housemates and program director gave me a warm welcome. That night, we went out to a bar to listen to one housemate play the guitar in a band, and the next day, we watched a horse demonstration in el campo or countryside accompanied with food and drinks!

Our house is located in Maldonado which is a smaller city right next to Punta del Este, a seaside city which is a popular vacation spot for neighboring countries Argentina and Brazil. So far, I’ve taken day trips to Montevideo, the capital city, and Piriápolis, a port town near Punta del Este. In Montevideo, my Spanish teacher and I visited the Visual Arts Museum, walked around Parque Rodó, which is similar to Central Park in NYC, and drove around the different neighborhoods. In Piriápolis, we walked along the boardwalk, ate fresh fish at the docks, and visited an artisanal feria or market.

Taking day trips and exploring the city are lots of fun, but my favorite part of living here is figuring out daily life challenges. A big difference compared to US grocery stores is that there is more contact with employees (which means more Spanish practice!). When buying fruits, meats, cheeses, and bakery items, I often have to speak with an employee about what I want and how much (which requires lots of practice with the metric system). It’s intimidating at first to do simple tasks, like change money or order food, but the challenge of speaking in a different language makes simple tasks more rewarding. Now a month into my trip, I feel more comfortable living here and speaking Spanish to people. Most of my interactions speaking Spanish with locals have been positive!

I’m excited to continue exploring the area, visit more towns across the country, and share my experiences. Hasta la próxima vez!

And this is why, today we want to tell you a little about how life was at school during most of the pandemic, how we adapted to the new reality, and how we prepare to receive many students again from different parts of the world in the coming months. We are very happy to know that this will be possible very soon.

Durante el último año continuamos enseñando español en línea y eso nos permitió no solo conectarnos con estudiantes fuera de Uruguay sino también continuar con las clases de nuestros estudiantes regulares siguiendo los protocolos recomendados. La experiencia dando clases por internet fue y sigue siendo muy interesante porque nos ofrece nuevas herramientas que permiten mayor flexibilidad en relación con los horarios, uso de materiales en línea y más frecuente conexión con nuestros estudiantes. Pero todos sabemos que las clases presenciales tienen algo imposible de conseguir con las clases en línea. Y por eso hoy estamos tan felices de anunciar que esperamos recibir a muchos estudiantes a partir de noviembre para volver a dar vida a nuestras aulas, nuestros recorridos por la ciudad, nuestras visitas a museos, bares, plazas, ferias, nuestras clases de conversación grupal y todas aquellas actividades que disfrutábamos tanto antes de la pandemia. // During the last year, we continued teaching Spanish online, which has allowed us not only to connect with students outside of Uruguay but also to continue with the classes of our regular students following the recommended protocols. The experience of teaching online was and continues to be very interesting because it offers us new tools that allow greater flexibility in relation to schedules, the use of online materials, and more frequent connection with our students. But we all know that face-to-face classes have something impossible to achieve with online clasess. And that is why today we are so happy to announce that we have the possibility to receive many students from November on to give life to our classrooms, our tours of the city, our visits t museums, bars, squares, fairs, our group conversation classes, and all those activities that we enjoyed so much before the pandemic.

Y quiero contarles algunas de las cosas que vivimos durante el último año en Punta del Este. Como algunos de los que están escuchando esto seguramente ya vieron en los videos que subimos a nuestro canal de Youtube y compartimos a través de nuestras redes sociales, vine a vivir a la escuela de Punta del Este cumpliendo mi sueño de vivir cerca del mar. Desde los primeros días en este muy hermoso lugar dediqué tiempo a recorrer los alrededores de la escuela y descubrir que el principal destino turístico de Uruguay no solo es atractivo en verano, hay muchas cosas que también se pueden hacer durante las otras estaciones y quiero darles solo algunos ejemplos. // And I want to tell you about some of the things we have experienced during the last year in Punta del Este. As some of you, who are listening to the podcast, surely have already seen in the videos that we upload to La Herradura’s YouTube channel and share through our social networks, I came to live at the Punta del Este school, fulfilling my dream of living near the sea. From the first days in the very beautiful place, I spent time visiting the school surroundings and discovering that the main tourist destination in Uruguay is not only attractive during the summer months, there are many things that can also be done during the other seasons and I want to give you only some examples.

Todo parece indicar que muy pronto vamos a seguir sumando historias con nuevos estudiantes que compartiremos en nuestras redes para los que todavía estén lejos, pero siempre invitándolos a venir. Llegó la deseada lluvia, esta vez si se llenaron los tajamares, así que tenemos a nuestros animales más que contentos. los arroyos cercanos se desbordaron y nos dejaron un poco aislados, pero por suerte tenemos un pequeño almacén /bar muy cerca. Les dejamos con algunas fotos y como pueden ver el día terminó con una hermos puesta de sol. // The desired rain arrived, and this time the cutwaters were filled, so our animals are more than happy! ¡Hola a todos! ¿Cómo están? // Hi everybody, how are you?

Ya es hora de romper el silencio por mi parte, puedo inventar miles de excusas, pero realmente no hay una válida. Me he dejado llevar por la parte negativa de esta pandemia, todas estas noticias preocupantes y desconsoladoras de las miles de personas que se enfermaron e incluso perdieron su vida a causa del Covid-19. // Its time to break the silence on my part, I can make up thousends of excuses, but there really is no valid one. I have been carried away by the negative side of this pandemic with all this worrying and hearthbreaking news from the thousands of people who became ill and even lost their lives due to Covid-19.

Me afectó enormemente el hecho de apenas poder recibir estudiantes presenciales en nuestras academias con el resultado de no poder dar trabajo a toda la gente que forma parte de nuestro equipo. Pero lo más importante es que todos nos encontramos bien y eso es una gran bendición. // I was greatly affected by the fact that we could hardly receive face-to-face students in our language centres with the results of not being able to give work to all the oeople who are part of our team. But the most important thing is that we all feel good and that is a great blessing.

Ya es hora de salir a dar la cara y agradecer a los estudiantes que nos siguen escribiendo, a los estudiantes que toman clases en línea, a los estudiantes que sí pudieron venir para tomar clases en nuestra academia y al equipo que siempre me acompaña. ¡Gracias a todos! // It is time to stand up and say thank you to all the students who continue writing to us, the students who take online classes, the students who were able to come to take classes at our Spanish school in Punta del Este and to the team that always accompanies me.

¿Qué cambios hubo en La Herradura? // What changes were made at La Herradura?

• Estamos dando clases en línea y nos gusta mucho esta nueva experiencia que vino para quedarse. // We are teaching online and we really like this new experience that came to stay.
• La casa en donde impartimos clases de español desde el 2002 en Montevideo se cerró momentáneamente, pero no se preocupen, en cuanto haya movimiento de estudiantes nuevamente abriremos en otro lugar totalmente renovado. // The house where we have taught Spanish since 2002 in Montevideo is momentarily closed, but do no worry, as soon as there is a movement of students we will open in another totally renovated place.
• Nuestro profesor Matías se mudó a la escuela en Punta del Este, así que puedes vivir una inmersión completa, ya que no solamente tendrás clases en el aula, sino también conversación y actividades después de tus clases. // Our teacher Matías has moved to the school in Punta del Este, so you can now live a complete immersion, since you will not only have classes in teh classroom, but also conversation and activities after your classes.
• El Cortijo La Herradura estaba pensado para recibir viajeros extranjeros, pero con la frontera cerrada no fue posible. Hemos abierto nuestras puertas al público uruguayo y ha sido una excelente decisión. Así que no te extrañe que cuando vengas al Cortijo compartas la cocina o sales a caballo con un uruguayo, ¿Qué mejor para practicar tu español después de las clases? Cortijo La Herradura was designed to receive foreign travelers, but with thte border closed it was not possible. We have opened our doors to the Uruguayan public and it has been an excellent decision. So do not be surprised that when you come to the Cortijo you share the kitchen or ride with a Uruguayan, what better way to practice your Spanish after classes?

For the second consecutive year, South America had the privilege of being able to observe this astronomical phenomenon, that will not occur in the region until 2048. Por segundo año consecutivo, Sudamérica tuvo el privilegio de poder observar este fenómeno astronómico que no volverá a ocurrir en la región hasta 2048. El espectacular eclipse solar se vio en forma total en Argentina y en Chile y en Uruguay en forma parcial. After many months without being able to receive students due to the pandemic, we are very happy to receive an American student tomorrow, December 5th 2020. Welcome Michelle! She will be for 2 months in our Spanish school La Herradura in Punta del Este and will live in the residence of the school, where she will have to do her quarantine for 7 days and on the seventh day perform a COVID test, if it is negative she can leave to visit Punta del Este or go to the beach that is only 2 blocks from the school and residence. The residence has a garden, so during your quarantine you can enjoy being outdoors and receiving your Spanish classes as well, since our Spanish teacher Matías lives in the residence. During her 2 months, she will work as a volunteer in a school for adolescents and seniors who have a mild mental disability. The NGO is very close to the academy. We thank all the students who participate in one of our volunteer projects, as they are of great help to these organizations. Después de muchos meses sin poder recibir estudiantes por la pandemia, estamos muy felices de poder recibir una estudiante americana. ¡Bienvenida Michelle! Ella va a estar durante 2 meses en nuestra escuela de español La Herradura en Punta del Este y vivirá en la residencia de la escuela, donde tendrá que hacer su cuarentena de 7 días y al séptimo día realizar un test COVID, si es negativo puede salir para recorrer Punta del Este o ir a la playa que está a solo 2 cuadras de la escuela y residencia. La residencia cuenta con un jardín, así que durante su cuarentena podrá disfrutar estar al aire libre y recibir sus clases de español también, ya que nuestro profesor de español Matías vive en la residencia. Durante sus 2 meses va a trabajar como voluntaria en una escuela para adolescentes y mayores que cuenta con una leve discapacidad mental. La ONG se encuentra muy cerca de la academia. Agradecemos a todos los alumnos que participan en uno de nuestros proyectos de voluntariado, ya que son de gran ayuda para dichos organizaciones. La escuela de español La Herradura in Punta del Este está situado en el barrio “Pinares”/”Las delicias” a dos cuadras de la playa “La Mansa”.
La casa principal es la residencia que cuenta con tres habitaciones, un salón comedor, cocina, un baño, una terraza y un jardín grande.
Una de las habitaciones tiene su baño privado y los otros 2 comparten un baño grande.
La escuela está situado en el jardín y cuenta con 3 aulas. Las aulas son luminosas con vista al jardín.
Si el tiempo lo permite se dan clases en el jardín, abajo de uno de los árboles.
Cerca de la escuela puedes encontrar pequeños supermercados, atm, lavandería, frutería, una farmacia, restaurantes y un bar con música en vivo durante los fines de semana.
La playa Mansa se encuentra a solo 2 cuadras de la escuela y es el lugar perfecto para pasar la tarde, nadando, tomar el sol, hacer las tareas, leer un libro o disfrutar de la puesta del sol.
El centro de Punta del Este se encuentra a 4km de la escuela, puedes tomar un bus, caminar o usar una de las bicicletas que ofrece la escuela.
Vale la pena visitar el puerto, famoso por sus lobos marinos, la gran variedad de restaurantes y bares.
Desde aquí puedes tomar un barco para visitar la “Isla de los lobos” y “Isla Gorriti”.
El centro de la ciudad es famoso por sus tiendas exclusivas y el mercado artesanal. Hay muchas cafeterías y restaurantes para poder disfrutar de un buen café o degustar una de las comidas típicas uruguayas.
El centro de Maldonado se encuentra a unos 15 minutos caminando y aquí puedes visitar el centro de la ciudad, museo, galerías y el centro cultural que ofrece muchas actividades.
En los alrededores de la escuela de español puedes visitar un parque indígena, un hermoso lago y un arboretum y el museo “Casa Pueblo”, un excelente lugar para disfrutar de la puesta del sol escuchando un poema de Carlos Páez Vilaró.

La Herradura Spanish school in Punta del Este is located in a tranquil neighborhood named “Pinares”/”Las Delicias” at only 2 blocks from the Mansa beach.
The main house is where the school residence is, with 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a terrace, and a large garden.
One of the bedrooms has a private bathroom with a toilet.
The other two bedrooms share a bathroom and a toilet.

The Mansa beach is only 2 blocks from the school and the perfect place to spend the afternoon swimming, sunbathe, making your homework, read a book, or enjoy the beautiful sunset.
The center of Maldonado is approximately 15 minutes’ walking distance from the school and here you can visit the city center, museums, galleries, and a cultural center with many activities.
The center of Punta del Este is 4 km from the school, you can take a bus, walk or use the bicycles the school offers.
Worth a visit is the port, famous for the sea lions and its variety of restaurants and bars. From here you can take a boat to the island “Gorriti” and of the sea lions.
The city center is famous for exclusive shops, and the artisan market. There are many coffee shops and restaurants to enjoy a good coffee or typical Uruguayan food.

El puerto de Punta del Este no es un puerto cualquiera. Hay barcos pesqueros, gran cantidad de yates, bares, restaurantes, y pescaderías que procesan el pescado recién sacado de la mar y alimentan con cabezas y colas a gaviotas y lobos marinos. Los lobos marinos son todo una atracción para los visitantes del puerto. Toman el sol en las veredas, caminos y estacionamiento del puerto, ¡así que no te sorprendas mucho cuándo te encuentras con uno! A pocos km del puerto se encuentra “La isla de lobos”. Hay excursiones de barco y inmersiones de buceo para nadar con ellos, ¡una experiencia inolvidable!

The port of Punta del Este is not just any port. There are fishing boats, lots of yachts, bars, restaurants, and fishmongers that process freshly caught fish from the sea and feed seagulls and sealions with head and tales. The sealions are an attraction for visitors to the port. They bask in the sun on the sidewalks, path, and parking lots of the port, so don’t be too surprised when you come across one! A few kilometers from the port is “La Isla de Lobos”. There are boat trips and dives to swim with them, an unforgettable experience!

On the 29^th of the month, just before pay-day, things were a bit tight and these pasta-like dumplings make from ground potato and flour were just about the cheapest thing you could make to eat. So the 29^th became ñoqui day, and to this day it’s considered good luck to eat ñoqui on the 29^th with a coin under your plate – this supposedly guarantees a prosperous month!

el matambre = meat roll (beef rolled with condiments, vegetables, ham, and egg, then sliced on meat. It is available either hot or cold as a lunch)

la milanesa = a fillet of beef fried in breadcrumbs (or milanesa de pollo is the same but with chicken)

“vamos a comer un asado” = “let’s have a barbeque. Different types of meat will be roasted on “una parilla” = a barbeque.

una hamburguesa = hamburger, available al pan (on bread) or al plato (straight on the plate).

El piropo (comentario coqueto) es parte de la cultura Rio Platense, adula a unos y enfurece a otros. Pero sea cual sea su perspectiva, algunos de la cosas que se les ocrurren pueden ser realmente divertidas. ¡Enviános uno si has escuchado alguno bueno! // The piropo (flirty comment) is a part of River Plate culture that flatters some, infuriates others. La familia es muy importante en América del Sur (¿bueno, donde no?). Muchas familias se juntan durante el fin de semana para disfrutar de un buen asado. Preguntarle a alguien sobre su familia es una buena manera de empezar una conversación en español.

The family is very important in South American culture, and many families get together every weekend for a long, chilled-out barbecue. Asking someone about their family is a good way to get to know someone and start a conversation with a local.

la madre / el padre / los padres = mother / father / parents

la mamá / el papá / los papás = mum / dad / parents

la hija / el hijo / los hijos = daughter / son / children

la hermana / el hermano = sister / brother

la abuela / el abuelo / los abuelos = grandmother / grandfather / grandparents

la nieta / el nieto / los nietos = granddaughter / grandson / grandchildren

la tía / el tío / los tíos = aunt / uncle / aunts and uncles

la sobrina / el sobrino / los sobrinos = niece / nephew / nieces and nephews

la prima / el primo / los primos = cousin / cousins

la cuñada / el cuñado = sister-in-law / brother-in-law

la suegra / el suegro = mother-in-law / father-in-law

la yerna / el yerno = daughter-in-law / son-in-law

Tenga en cuenta que la forma masculina y la forma femenina, son muy similares, por lo general, solo la letra en final es diferente. En plural, se usa el masculino (incluso si incluye miembros femeninos de la familia). Por ejemplo; mi tío es mi tío, pero si hablo de mis tíos, me refiero a mi tío y mi tía. Es por eso que los hispanohablantes que aprenden inglés comienzan haciendo preguntas como: ” ¿Tienes hermanos?, en lugar de: ” ¿tienes hermanos y hermanas?

Note that the masculine form and the feminine form are very similar – usually, just the final letter is different – but in the plural, you use the masculine (even if it includes female family members). For example mi tío is my uncle, but if I talk about mis tíos I probably mean my aunt(s) and uncle(s). Spanish speakers learning English will often start off asking questions like, “Do you have any brothers?” instead of “Do you have any brothers or sisters?”

¿Vivís con tu familia? / ¿Usted vive con su familia? = Do you live with your family?

A practicar: identifique si las siguentes frases usan la formar formal (Ud/Uds.)o la forma informal (vos). Luego cualesquiera que sea usa el otro pronombre. Hoy me quedo en casa. Hoy voy a quedarme en casa. / Hoy me voy a quedar en casa.

¿Qué estás haciendo (en este momento)? En este momento estoy hablando por Skype.

¿Qué haces (en las tardes/cada tarde)? (pregunta en presente “habitual”) “normalmente”. En las tardes yo practico yoga.

Muy diferente: Presente habitual y Presente de “estar + gerundio” ¿Qué comes en las mañanas? ¿Qué estás comiendo (en este momento)?

¿Dónde está Pablo? Pablo está durmiendo. (no es correcto “Pablo duerme”)

¿Qué está haciendo el presidente en este momento? El está trabajando en su edificio.

¿Qué está haciendo Luis Suárez? El está entrenando (entrenar) en su casa.

¿Qué está haciendo Paul Mc Cartney? El está tocando su bajo/su piano/su guitarra/su ukelele (algún instrumento/algunos instrumentos).

¿Qué está haciendo Angela Merkel? Ella está gobernando Alemania. Está intentando salvar Alemania.

Estos días “estoy tocando” el piano. Usualmente…….(presente habitual)

 pero últimamente……(presente de “estar + gerundio”

Usualmente nosotros cenamos a las 20 hs… pero últimamente, estamos cenando después de las 21 hs.

Usualmente los niños se duermen a las 22, pero últimamente ellos están durmiéndose / se están durmiendo a las 23.

Usualmente yo me despierto a las 7, pero últimamente estoy despertándome / me estoy despertando a las 10.

Usualmente tú sales todos los días pero últimamente tú estás quedándote / te estás quedando en casa.

Usualmente María (sentarse) se sienta en una silla, pero últimamente ella está sentándose / se está sentando en un sofá.

Usualmente yo (irse) me voy de casa a las 8 hs… pero últimamente yo estoy yéndome / me estoy yendo un poco más tarde.

Hitchhiking is a fairly common way of getting around outside of the cities, especially among young people and students. Obviously you need to use your common sense and don’t go alone or at night, but it is considered pretty safe in Uruguay. Most commonly you’ll be picked up by an open-backed truck.

Los mensajes de texto contienen muchas abreviaturas que pueden convertir un mensaje simple, en una corriente confusa de consonantes. Estas son algunas de las abreviaturas más frecuentes.

Just like in English, text messages contain a lot of abbreviations in Spanish which can turn a simple message into a garbled stream of consonants. Here are some of the most frequent abbreviations.

In text messages, people often leave out the silent h, so that ahora becomes aora, hasta becomes asta etc. Also, qu is sometimes replaced by k, so that aquí becomes aki, quien  becomes kien etc.

Ta = Yes, OK (short for “está bien”)

Día de los Trabajadores: 1 de mayo en Chicago. Los trabajadores protestaron/manifestaron (manifestar) a favor de tener más leyes ( y derechos) laborales. Hasta en el pueblo más pequeño del Uruguay, puedes encontrar un bar, ya que al uruguayo le gusta acudir a estos lugares para encontrarse con un amigo o hacer amistades nuevas. Un lugar perfecto para practicar tu español. Aparte de todo tipo de bebidas, puedes pedir aperitivos o minutas.

Even in the smallest town of Uruguay you can find a bar, since the Uruguayans like to go to these places to meet a friend or make new friends. a perfect place to practise your Spanish with the locals. Apart from all kind of drinks, you can order snacks and simple dishes.

un cortado (casí siempre viene con un vaso de soda para limpiarte la boca) = a coffee (the coffee almost always comes with a little glass of sparkling water to clean your palate!)

un café con leche = a strong coffee with hot milk (usually half milk half coffee. The waiter may ask you, ¿Más café o más leche?)

un submarino = hot milk flavoured with chocolate

un té con leche fría = a tea with cold milk (this is for all the British readers! otherwise you get frothy hot milk)

las minutas = short-order meals (such as pasta, pizza, hot sandwiches)

un alfajor = a mini cake-sandwich, usually filled with dulce de leche

unos bizcochos (Uruguay) = small pastries available with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings

las masas finas = sweet mini pastries

una cerveza = a beer (usually a litre bottle)

un chopp = a glass of draught beer

un vino tinto / blanco = red / white wine

un trago = a cocktail

Es muy común pedir algo para picar cuándo están tomando. It’s common to have something to eat while you drink.

Los guías turísticas son muy buenos, pero caminar con un gran mapa llama mucho la atención, así que con estas frases puedes dejar tu guía en tu alojamiento y pregúntale a los lugareños si necesitas una dirección. Si se dirija a una persona mayor, es mejor usar la forma de usted y con los jóvenes la forma informal de vos o tu. Si está dudando, siempre es mejor usar usted, pero no te preocupes, ya que la gente no se ofende rápidamente y generalmente aprecian el esfuerzo por hablar español.

Guide books are great but walking round with a great big map you really stand out as a tourist: with these phrases you can leave the book at your accommodation and just ask the locals when you need directions. If you address an older person it’s better to use the formal form usted, and with younger people the informal vos. If in doubt, use usted. But don’t worry, the people aren’t easily offended and will generally appreciate your effort to speak Spanish.

Pero estas frases hacen que la experiencia en general, sea más fluida y agradable. As in most countries, taxis are the easiest form of transport for foreign visitors: you can just get in and name your destination. But these phrases make the experience smoother and friendlier all round. All the phrases below use the more formal usted form, which is appropriate for talking to someone you don’t know well.

En Uruguay la palabra por el bus es ómnibus, en Argentina es colectivo. También hay un par de diferencias en el sistema, en Uruguay le da el dinero al conductor que a su vez le da el cambio, o puedes comprar una tarjeta en una oficina “Redpagos” o “Abitab”, mientras que en Argentina necesita el cambio correcto y comprar el boleto en una maquina automatizada.

In Uruguay the word for bus is ómnibus, in Argentina it is is colectivo. There are a few differences in the systems too: in Uruguay you give the money to the driver or conductor who will give you change, or you can buy a bus card, whereas in Argentina you need the correct change and buy your ticket from an automated machine.

Aún así afortunadamente, hoy en día podemos continuar con nuestra pasión vía soportes técnicos. // The most terrible thing for a teacher is not to share the direct experience of teaching with their students. Still fortunately, today we can continue our passion via techical support.

Desde Montevideo, continuamos dando clases a los estudiantes que debieron salir antes o a aquellos que todavía se encuentran en Montevideo. Ellos nos cuentan desde sus países de origen, cómo es que han seguido con sus dinámicas de vida, en circunstancias tan particulares. // From Montevideo, we continue teaching our students who had to leave earlier, or who are still in Uruguay. They tell us from their home country, how they have continued with theirl live dynamics, in such particular circunstances.

Para nosotros es el pretexto perfecto para continuar practicando la lengua y aprendiendo más conceptos gramaticales. // For us this is the perfect excuse to continue praticing the language and learning more grammatical concepts.

Desde La Herradura queremos transmitirles que la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, equipo docente y administrativo es nuestra principal prioridad y es por eso que hemos tomado medidas, una de ellas, la cancelación de las clases presenciales en la academia. Dadas las condiciones, la propuesta es impartir las clases por Skype.  // From La Herradura we want to let you know that the safety of our students, teaching and administrative team is our main priority and that is why we have taken measures, one of them, the cancellation of lessons at the school and the proposal is to teach the classes on Skype.

Muchos de ustedes están obligados a quedarse en sus casas y por eso les ofrecemos la posibilidad de seguir con sus estudios de español a distancia. Aquellos alumnos que ya estudiaron español en La Herradura, tenemos los contenidos gramaticales que estudiaron durante su estancia en Montevideo, de esta manera, podemos seguir avanzando. A los estudiantes que no estudiaron en nuestra escuela de español, les pedimos que nos envíen la prueba de nivel para así evaluarlos. // Many of you are obliged to stay at home and that is why we offer you the possibility of continuing your Spanish studies at a distance. We have the grammatical content for those student who have already studied at our Spanish school. To the students who did not study Spanish at La Herradura, we ask them to send us the level test to evaluate them. The classes are made up of 1 or 2 students and have a maximum duration of 1 hour, 1 hour and 20 minutes since the dynamics are very intense for both the teacher and the student. At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of attendance.

Las clases se integran de 1 o 2 estudiantes y tienen una duración de 1 hora máxima, 1 hora y 20 minutos, ya que la dinámica es muy intensa para el profesor y el estudiante.  Al final del curso, los estudiantes recibirán un certificado de asistencia. // The classes are made up of 1 or 2 students and have a maximum duration of 1 hour, 1 hour and 20 minutes since the dynamics are very intense for both the teacher and the student. At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of attendance.

Navidad y fin de año en Uruguay // Christmas and New Year

Se festeja la noche del 24 y el día de Navidad en familia y la noche del 31 en familia y/o con amigos. La comida típica es el lechón y el cordero asado y de postre helado y turrón. Los jóvenes salen a bailar tanto el 24 como el 31 de diciembre y hay fuegos artificiales ambas noches. Una de las tradiciones de la noche del 31 son; comer 12 uvas, llenar un balde o copa de agua y tirarlo hacia atrás, para quitar las malas energías de la casa y asegurar el comienzo limpio, salir a la calle con una valija a medianoche y dar vuelta a la manzana, para asegurarse al menos un viaje en el nuevo año. // Christmas Eve and Day are celebrated in family and the night of the 31st with family and/or Friends. The typical food is suckling pig and roast lamb and ice cream and nougat for dessert. They young people go out dancing both nights and there is fireworks on both nights as well. Some of the traditions of the 31^st are:  eat 12 grapes, fill a bucket or glass of water and throw it back, to remove the bad energies of the house and ensure a clean star, go outside with a suitcase at midnight and walk around the house, to make sure you will at least make 1 trip in the New Year.

Clases de inmersión en Punta del Este // Spanish immersion

Durante la temporada bajo en nuestra escuela de español en Punta del Este, los estudiantes que aprendieron español disfrutaron de una experiencia muy especial. Recibieron las clases de español en la casa de nuestra profesora Susana, una atención muy personalizado // During the low season at our Spanish school in Punta del Este season, our students have  enjoyed a very special experience. They have received their Spanish lessons at the home of our teacher Susana, a very personalized attention.

Nuevo profesor de español // New Spanish teacher.

En el mes de enero dimos la bienvenida a un nuevo profesor Matías. Aparte de dar clases de español, organiza actividades y paseos por las tardes y durante los fines de semana para que nuestros estudiantes puedan experimentar y aprender más sobre la cultura uruguaya. Lo más destacado de las visitas culturales; recorrido por diferente barrios de Montevideo, visitando museos, edificios históriciso y parques recorrido gastronónimico, artesanal y musical, recorrido por las playas cercanas de Montevideo. Es un placer tenerlo en el equipo. // In January we have welcomed a new teacher, Matias. Besides teaching, he also organizes activities and week end excursions for our students, so they´re able to experience and learn more about Uruguayan culture. Highlights from the cultural visits; walking tour through different neighborhoods visiting museums, historical buildings and parks, gastronomical-, art- and musical tour. It is a pleasure having him in our team.

Les queremos dar la gracias a todos los voluntarios y pasantes que participaron de algún proyecto que ofrece nuestra academia de español.
